The Soldiers', Sailors', Marines' and Airmen's Club is not affiliated with the U.S Federal Government, the State of New York, or the City of New York. It is a private Not-For-Profit organization, founded in 1919, by patriotic citizens with the support of General John J. Pershing to support the men and women of the Armed Forces. Its founding Credo was:

The Soldiers', Sailors', Marines' and Airmen's Club has NEITHER AN ENDOWMENT FUND NOR A MEMBERSHIP CHARGE to generate income for the Club. YOUR MILITARY SERVICE IS YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEE.

WE RECEIVE NO FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FROM ANY OF THE FEDERAL, STATE, OR NEW YORK CITY GOVERNMENTS, GRANTS OR SUBSIDIES. . In providing inexpensive accommodations in Manhattan, the Club incurs an annual deficit of approximately $250,000. WE ARE DEPENDENT ON YOUR TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS TO CONTINUE TO SERVE THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE U.S. AND ALLIED ARMED FORCES AND OTHER ELIGIBLE GROUPS.
